An Evidence-Based program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada

Arpeggio Health Services is thriller to be among Canada's first training providers to offer The Working Mind to the public! Until 2024 this program was only available for internal delivery within teams belonging to the same organization. Our experience delivering Mental Health First Aid taught us two things: before making the decision to train an entire team many organizations like to test the waters by sending a couple of folks to try out a program; and there's tremendous value in training with a mixed group where participants from different organizations across the country bring unique perspectives to the training space, enriching the learning experience. You can earn this nationally recognized certificate through virtual or in-person training.

We're commonly asked about the differences between Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and The Working Mind (TWM). These programs complement one another, so they're beneficial either alone or together. We like to say that MHFA teaches participants how to throw a life ring to someone who might be drowning, while TWM is about learning how to swim. In other words, MHFA is primarily responsive (teaching how to recognize and respond to signs of mental unwellness) while TWM is primarily proactive (teaching how to promote and retain positive mental wellbeing and resilience).

The Working Mind is a mental health training course designed to initiate a change in how you think, feel, and act about mental health in the workplace and beyond. What can The Working Mind provide for individuals, teams and your organization?

Mental Health Awareness and Understanding
Recognize signs of good, declining, and poor mental health in others, and yourself

Break Down Stigma
Cultivate a safe, supportive environment where mental health can be discussed openly and without judgment, using respectful and non-stigmatizing language

Strengthen Communication Skills

Develop a shared language to foster open dialogue about mental health between colleagues and within teams

Improve Resilience

Improve individual resilience through practicing coping strategies in times of stress and equipping managers to support their teams with the same tools and strategies

The Working Mind for Employees is structured into 3 distinct modules, while The Working Mind for Managers encompasses an addition module:

Module 1 - Mental Health Stigma

  • Examine concepts of mental health and discuss the impacts of stigma on individuals living with mental health or substance use problems

Module 2 - Mental Health Continuum Tool

  • The continuum is a dynamic model that visualizes mental health across a spectrum, ranging from healthy & adaptive to severe symptoms of mental distress, highlighting the fluid nature of mental health and the potential for movement in either direction

  • Learn to use the Mental Health Continuum Tool to notice changes in mental health and well-being of yourself and others, and how to have conversations with others about mental health

Module 3 - Stress and Resilience

  • Explore the impacts of stress on mental health, and practice applying the Big 4 Coping Strategies — simple but proven tools to deal with stress effectively and remain resilient

Module 4 - Supporting Your Team  *This module is delivered only in The Working Mind for Managers; TWM for Employees includes the above 3 modules*

  • Practice skills to support their team’s mental health and well-being

  • Review appropriate actions to take in each colour zone of the Mental Health Continuum, and to address related to critical incidents and supporting employees

The Working Mind: Manager is 8 hours in length and The Working Mind: Employee is 5 hours. Additionally, content can be adapted for the following specific audiences...

  • The Working Mind: Trades

  • The Working Mind: Long-Term Care

  • The Working Mind: Legal Sector

  • The Working Mind: Sports

  • The Working Mind: Healthcare

  • The Working Mind: First Responders

We offer TWM to the public regularly, so you can sign up for a scheduled course individually (having participants from across the country with experience in a variety of industries always makes for great dialogue!); we also offer this program as a private training option. No pre-course work is required.
